It's been 20 years since I've been to a horror film festival and that's far too long, so I popped along to Leicester Square for part of FrightFest over the weekend and was delighted to see that this beloved genre of ours seems to be as alive and well and weird and mad and stupid and funny and scary and daft as ever. I only got to see a few of the films being shown because I only had a ticket for Friday but I came away with enough movies to seek out to keep me going for a while. The films I saw were:

The Horseman - Bleak and brutal Australian revenge thriller. Zed will love it.

Beware the Moon - Feature length documentary on An American Werewolf in London

An American Werewolf in London - remastered with Blu-Ray technology, this really has stood the test of time and it was great to finally see it on the big screen. John Landis did a Q&A afterwards amongst assembled cast and crew.

Shadow - Italian horror. If you love Italian horror (and we know who we are) you'll love this.

The Horde - Not allowed to talk about it apparently as it was a sneak preview and other message boards have been embargoed so I won't. But it made me very tired.

And that was it. Movies I'm now keen to see however include:

Triangle - Bristolian Christopher Smith's new one
Dead Snow - See Zed thread
Pontypool - Virus spreads through words and language
Smash Cut - Low budget moviemaking homage with familiar faces
Giallo - Argento (I know, I know!)
It's Alive - Larry Cohen remake
The Human Centipede - insane film about mad doctor removing people's kneecaps and stitching them mouth to anus so they form 'one long glorious centipede'
Clive Barker's Dread

And they say there's no stories left to tell!...

Interesting to hear about American Werewolf - I was at the London Film Festival in the 'eighties when they first showed that, at the Leicester Square Odeon, and that had an introduction and Q&A by Landis too!

For what it's worth, I rented "Smashcut" at the weekend and really enjoyed it - though enjoyment levels will, I presume, be dictated by the viewers love of 60s/cheap-and-cheerful exploitation cinema.
