'Although he acknowledged a debt to Poe, H.P. Lovecraft is now recognized as a master of his own kind of horror, fantasy and science fiction. He created a fictional world -- complete with monsters and gods -- and encourages his friends to bring it to life in their own work.'

'That world includes Miskatonic University, which appears in several of his short stories and the novella "At the Mountains of Madness." Miskatonic U is in Arkham (not a real town) in Essex County...'

Mate, just e-mailed you. The problem with Lovercraft is his ponderous build-ups, and his inability to get straight to the point...hiding behind fancy writing (;

Frank, personally, I think the carefully orchestrated buildups are a big part of what makes Lovecraft's best work so effective and memorable.

Huw - sorry, mate. I really was joking. Sort of a private joke between Steve and I.

Sort of a private joke between Steve and I...

...referring to some crazy editorial advice Frank received recently. Ah, the eldritch, creeping terror!

Though Lovecraft has his critics (and plenty of them), some of his 'scenes' are unforgettable; certain passages in The Dunwich Horror, for example; absolutely superb writing.

Ah, I see now.

Have either of you seen the film Out of Mind? It's the best film about HPL I've seen - low budget, but made with passion and obvious knowledge of its subject, and featuring a magnificent performance by Christopher Heyerdahl as Ech-Pi-El himself.

Huw - I haven't seen the film, mate. Haven't even heard of it ): Is it fairly new?

Steve - just e-mailed, again, mate (:

Wasn't (isn't?) the Chaosium game company long-since doing this kind of thing already?...

I guess there's something about Lovecraft that lends itself to the replication of "artifacts," which is interesting to note. Again, for Chaosium, it was to enhance the role-playing game.

As video games fade, and books "fade" (not really, but referring back to the e-books thread), and movies fade... we need a new form of entertainment... something comprehensive, life-invading, voluntarily interactive and yet out-of-our-controlling... something with the flavor of ExISTENz but more the scope of THE GAME (an oft-overlooked, borderline horror film)... anyone old enough to remember play-by-mail RPG's?... Well, something that includes all manner of communication, interaction, information... you read this, you must research that, you go online to view this on youtube... and then, you must grab your flashlight and venture into the graveyard the next town over by midnight, or the story won't go on... and the problem is, by that point, you're absolutely hooked....

Craig, I remember a PC video game which was due to be released sometime in 2002 called 'Majestic'or 'The Majestic'. This was a 'game' which revolved around conspiracy theories. The player created an account and then would receive real time emails to his/her actual email account as well as voicemails or txts to their real mobile at all hours of the day or night involving them in a fictional plot. The player would be directed to websites (some real,some not)or real world locations (depending on the players location) to research the plot as it unfolded. The game was shelved as it neared completion due to 911 when all things with a terrorism or conspiracy theme were deemed no longer palatable.

I also recall another PC game where the player had to use the web and video sites to find a kidnap victim before the serial killer executed her. The killer would send the player actual emails and txts offering clues and taunting the player blurring that fine line between fantasy and reality.

Just found the website:http://www.inmemoriam-thegame.com/gb/gam1.htm
