Next Friday, Sky 1 - 10pm - Derek Akorah is hosting a live seance to try to contact the spirit of Michael Jackson. Just when you think the world of celebrity can't disappear any further up its own arse - it gets even tackier. It makes any of the Katy Price/Peter Andre shows sound like intellectual entertainment. |

This should be the comedy highlight of the year - a camp faux medium trying to contact a dead kiddie fiddler. Typical Sky programming. |

Is that monkeys playing tennis or people playing tennis with monkeys? |

Would you use the monkey as the bat or the ball? both would have their own amusement... |

Sure the guy even looks like a used-car salesman. How can anyone even begin to take the twat seriously? I guess because there are an infinite number of even bigger knob-ends in the world for him to feed off (to paraphrase P.T. Barnum)... I sense a vampire analogy coming on - or maybe something ruder! Having said that... I do believe in existence after the apparent "death" of the individual. |

Weber it's a reference to Alan Partridge. |

Ah, Alan Partridge would use live monkeys for bats. I knew I'd heard the phrase somewhere, I just wondered what the practucalities of the sport would be... |

Weber hasn't watched any comedy since 1985, Zed. Be fair to him. |

Has this Derek's psychic abilities ever been verified? Has he done amazing things that defy credibility? |

>>Or anything by Russ Abbot and his madcap madhouse including Bella 'gosh aren't fat ladies funny' Emberg and Les 'comedy genius' Dennis.<< Watch it, Gary - I happen to be a big fan of Russ Abbot and "old" comedy and comedians generally. I know a lot of it is considered politically incorrect nowadays, but there was a sort of innocence to comedy back then - more so than the kind of "let's have a dig at everybody" rubbish that passes for comedy nowadays. But back to this Derek what's-his-name and his attempts to contact the deceased Jackson live on TV - surely that IS a joke isn't it? I mean, what sort of people are going to watch THAT? |

Anything apart from bemused spectating, Caroline, would surely classify as disturbed. If anyone's tuning in desperate to get some information, or longing to hear Michael speak one last time... they deserve a psychic.... |

Acorah's been shown to be a conman on numerous occasions. On the show MOST HAUNTED, he 'channelled' a bunch of ghosts that the psychologist made up beforehand and asked the crew to talk about backstage. Many of the names of these supposed ghosts were anagrams of 'I'm a cheat', 'Derek Fake', etc. But Acorah still pulls them in, has his own TV shows, fills theatres. I pointed some of his fakery out to a woman who's into all things seancey a year or two ago, and she nearly attacked me. Not Acorah. Me. She exploded. Especially when I showed her a link on You Tube wherein Yvette Fielding, the 'star' of Most Haunted calls him 'a fake bastard' in a clip not broadcast. |

Especially when he started ranting and threatening...comedy gold. |

Just a thought... But is this fakery part of a tradition in a way? It's bullshit - clever bullshit at times though....It's almost a victorian thing....Catch out the fake. gcw |

The same thing was true of Russ Abbot. He simply wasn't funny. They just made it all up, told us he was, misled us. Les Dennis is on YouTube saying how unfunny Russ is. And Bella won't speak to him any more. |

Don't forget, Les Dennis has a bit of horror pedigree. He was in Clive Barker's first theatre productions, part of those early horrors Barker wrote. In fact, Dennis talks about it in his autobiography. (Not that I've read it all, of course.) I've only seen Acorah 'get possessed' once, but it was indeed very funny. He just looks like an aggressive, Scouse drunk... GCW, yeah, I think there is a sort of history and tradition to those medium theatre acts. Derren Brown recreated the techniques in one of his recent tours. |

He was in Clive Barker's first theatre productions, part of those early horrors Barker wrote. What's that?! Early works by Clive Barker I may be unaware of... earlier than the 'Books Of Blood' you mean!! I'd heard he made a few weird student films in the 1970s but had no idea there was any written material. As for early TV comedy I have to say the God of my youth was Benny Hill though I haven't seen any of his material in decades and would be almost terrified to now! Is he still deemed funny?... |

Even Barker couldn't make Dennis scarier than on Familty Fortunes. Frightening lack of talent. The only laugh he's ever got from me was when he was playing himself in Extras. |

Barker wrote plays before the Books of Blood, Stephen. Ran a company of players, uh, The Dog Company, I think, and toured various, mostly grim Barker-penned plays. Les Dennis, the youngest member of the troupe, appeared in a few before quitting to do stand-up in nightclubs (Barker said he was prostituting his talent.) |

If it's up there I'll give you the money myself... Barker thought he was a good actor apparently. I think he did well in Extras, showed pathos. |

"Barker said he was prostituting his talent." I don't even need to make a snarky comment on this. It makes itself. |
