I just found out that there's a remake of The Stepfather in cinemas at the moment!!! That was an almost perfect film first time round. Terry O'Quinn (Locke from Lost with hair) is one of the most convincing psychos to hit the screen. The opening 5 minutes are worth the price of admission by themselves and you'll never hear the Campdown Racers the same way again. And some braindead moron has decided that they can do it better!!! Why even try? |

I liked the original a lot, but come on, you could remake it... it wasn't PERFECT perfect.... |

There should be a predefined quality threshold point at which it's decided that the movie should never be remade because it's pointless. The Stepfather easily passes any predefined point you could throw at it. As did the Hitcher. As did most of Hitchcock. the Birds is PERFECT but that hasn't stopped the retread machine that is the new Hollywood. |

As expected, the new Stepfather is almost universally panned on IMDB. It's by the same people that did the remake of Prom Night, so that should tell you the general quality standard to expect. |

I loved the original 'Stepfather' film! Even the 2 or 3 sequels weren't too bad. |

The sequel, #2, yeah, that was a pretty good one! Kinda unintentionally funny a lot, from what I remember.... |

Another thing that has struck me about all these SHIT American/Hollywood remakes is just how sanitised they are compared to the hard-hitting (and usually un-PC) impact of the originals. Mainstream US horror cinema needs a good boot up the posterior to reinject some life into it... visceral risk-taking English language films like 'Antichrist' or 'Wolf Creek' or the Brit horrors of Neil Marshall point the way Hollywood should be going. This matters because when Hollywood does original horror well (as in the 1970s/80s) it energises the whole genre and attracts the best talent to give it a go... e.g. would a director like Stanley Kubrick ever have thought of making a HORROR FILM at any other time than 1980? |
