Died on the 18th of this month, apparently, from cancer. RIP. A great loss to the horror genre. The Deep red Horror Handbook was indispensable to me in the 1980s for reading about films I couldn't get to see (thanks to DVD, I've now seen most of them). Balun wrote wittily and succinctly about some great films and some terrible ones - oddly, it was his reviews of the latter that made me seek out some pretty obscure titles. |

I had the Gore Score and practically carried it about with me bewteen the ages of about 13 and 15 (I've lost it now, which I'm really pissed off about) - I used to think I'd never see any of the films in there. I still remember his review of the movie Monster Dog: "With Alice Cooper. See title. Fuck it." Huge shame and a great loss. S |

A great loss - through the late 80s, I was the only person I knew with an interest in horror and Fangoria and Balun (with his articles in that and Gorezone) really kept me going. |
