Rather than blur the paranormal thread again, I'll put this here: http://skeptico.blogs.com/skeptico/2009/01/psychic-joe-power-wrong-about-shannon _matthews.html It does seem very specific, and would suggest that Derren Brown was remarkably - one might say admirably - gentle in his investigation. |

It was very gentle, all things considered. A clever move. It let the so-called psychic's failings speak for themselves, so Derren himself emerged looking fair and sensible, rather than the aggressor. Power emerged a whining charlatan. I enjoyed his downfall immensely. As Derren said, although they might offer comfort, such fakes rob the deceased of respect, and the bereaved of dignity. |

I'm guessing you're teasing, Tony, at least where the likes of Mr Power are concerned. My own death looms, but the existence of people like him makes no difference to it. |

I thought Brown was gentle and considerate, and yup, the Powers guy did reveal himself to anyone able to see him without blinkers. Powers did that thing so many "psychics" do when they feel caught out. Blamed the person who's unconvinced of their brilliance, and then accused them of trying to make fools out of the people who believe in the 'psychic'. It's a cunning, underhand move, of course. It makes it an "us and them" thing. And I've experienced this myself, the anger and hurt people aim toward you when you show a 'psychic' to be a fraud. It's sincere and dreadful pain they feel. And that is what Powers and his lot must take responsibility for. |

Mind you, compared to Derek Acorah, as Harry Hill points out . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZyy12n1z_c |

>>>and then accused them of trying to make fools out of the people who believe in the 'psychic'. Simon Cowell did the same in a recent interview in defence of all the shit he produces. |

You've got me interested to watch this now as I love seeing charlatans hoist by their own petard but could never warm to Randi's overly smug, stage-managed aggression in any of his TV exposés. If Derren Brown just sits back and lets parasites like Joe Power (why do they all look like used car salesmen) sink themselves then more power to him! But no matter how many fake psychics or paranormal frauds are exposed that still should not be used as "proof" that all is explicable and human knowledge has no limitations... |

"I'm guessing you're teasing, Tony, at least where the likes of Mr Power are concerned. My own death looms, but the existence of people like him makes no difference to it." It makes contemplating my death worse when there exists the possibility that a psychic might presume to speak for me when I'm gone. |

There has to be a paranormal link between all the 'shit that Simon Cowell' produces, there's no other possible explanation (: |

"Bugger, I wish you hadn't said that! Still, I'll creep in an incomplete and ungainly shape behind any that do." You can always give a password to friends and family. ("He's saying something about 'a load of bollocks'. Does that mean anything to you?") |

The absolutely useless author Richard Staines (in his non-fiction opus My Wife was Satan's Slut) touched on this subject: Before it happened to me, I didn’t believe in all that devil worship stuff either. But I must advise my readers not to mess around with the Secret Art. If your wife gets invited to something like “Women’s Lib Discussion Group”, "Weightwatchers", “Peckham Campaign for Solidarity with South Africa” or “Female Poetry Workshop” I strongly advise against letting her go. There are dangers of a very real nature in dabbling with things we don’t understand. Mark S. |

I've just been reading about a doctor who became inexplicably psychic in later life. It knocked him for six, and has completely changed his attitude about the world. It was one of the most convincing articles I've ever read on the subject. But yes, I was teasing. A bit.... |

None of whom is, thankfully, Pauline. Catherine Tate was bad enough without another "funny woman" getting involved. I mean, where next? Dawn French? Ruby Wax? Janet Brown? |

"Catherine Tate was bad enough without another "funny woman" getting involved." Tate was an actress before she took up comedy. I thought she was actually rather good in WHO. |

Here's Joe Power trying to explain the Mini incident on the Derren Brown show. Hilarious. His interview starts about an hour into this broadcast, which is archived until tomorrow afternoon. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p007pjns/Billy_Butler_11_05_2010/ |

The Mini explanation comes at 1.09 into the Billy Butler show. Do remember that Mr Power's precise words to Claire Cooper were "Did you have a Mini?" |

These guys are becoming more repellent - this week's baddie berates a wheelchair-bound teenager for being lazy. |
