I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Zombieland is a better Zom-Com than Shaun of the Dead. Neither of them can beat Pater Jackson's Brain Dead though. | ||

You done broke the limb, because no way is ZOMBIELAND - though good - better than SHAUN OF THE DEAD. But I'd agree, BRAIN DEAD (known here in the States as DEAD ALIVE) is the best of the lot so far.... | ||

Zombieland managed to actually give us some genuine scenes of tension in among the laughs, unlike SOTD. And it had the most brilliant unexpected cameo by Bill Murray... | ||

We've watched Zombieland twice - once at the cinema and once on DVD and had a really good time with it on each viewing. My own feeling is that it's as good as Shaun of the Dead but very different. Brain Dead is still my favourite though (but it was too silly for Lady P!) | ||

Bill Murray made ZOMBIELAND, I'll admit. But to me, to analogize, it felt like a young adult novel, compared to the others (let alone the wider genre). Also, it wanted to be serious (and so failed) in ways the other two you mention didn't: they knew their place, and didn't go for real tension, that's not what they were setting out to do.... | ||

Serious in a young adult fiction kind of way, Jonathan... I felt it had a kind of reverence for the angsty core of its lead character, a kind of idealism about it, that the others - despite moments of depth (like with Bill Nighy's character in SHAUN) - kept thoroughly comedic. | ||

Judged on solely on a very simple criteria, i.e. which one made me laugh more, I much prefer Zombieland. It may just be a case of the whole Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg thing being lost of me, though. I didn't really get on with Spaced, and didn't much like Hot Fuzz. And as for Scott Pilgrim... Ugh... | ||

Spaced was just ace, and Hot Fuzz did the business as well. Didn't bother with Scott Pilgrim or Paul as neither looked my cup of tea | ||

'Brain Dead' is marginally better than 'Shaun Of The Dead' - both are bona-fide horror/comedy classics - but I haven't seen 'Zombieland'. | ||

SHAUN and Z'LAND are such totally different films it's unfair to compare them. They're each so rooted in their own country/culture/sense of humour. I love them both but, with a gun to my head, I'd probably choose SHAUN. As for BRAINDEAD - I thought it had a hilarious premise and some great scenes in the beginning, but then it just got too "Three Stooges" for me. Same reason I didn't like EVIL DEAD 2 or SOCIETY. The slapsticky stuff just seemed to go on and on until it overstayed its welcome and just became tiresome. | ||

I suppose it's not really a zomcom but my favourite ever horror-comedy is RE-ANIMATOR. It's one of my favourite movies *full stop*. It just hits the right note of funny/silly/slapstick and I don't know why that one works for me and others of a similar ilk don't. | ||

Zombieland Double Tap - TEN YEARS after the first - is for me possibly even better than the first. It just felt relaxed, content to be fun and not hugely ambitious or flashy. It kind of meandered nicely, barely focussed, I loved it. |
