I shelled out for the new DVD of Norwegain horror-comedy "Dead Snow", and watched it last night. As expected, it's mad. Really mad. Nazi zombies in the snowy Norwegain mountains, who not only run at speed after their prey but engage in stand-up fist fights.

The first 45 minutes are actually a decent stab at creating some tension, and it makes me think the director could do a very good straight horror film, but the second part of the film, when the zombies come out to play, throws all that aside in favour of some extreme gore and rather amusing sight gags.

I really enjoyed this - it had the same gleeful exuberance of Peter Jackson's early work (one of the characters even wears a "Braindead" T Shirt but lacks the intelligence of the recent "Shaun of the Dead". The plot is flimsy and at times illogical, the gore effects are well done and occasionally funny, and there's even a touch of pathos thrown in there for good measure. If you're after something very stupid yet very entertaining you could do a lot worse than this.

I think you'll enjoy it, John - just leave your brain in that dusty little jar on the mantlepiece for the evening. :-)

I saw this a few weeks back - definitely good fun, but I'm not sure I'd bother to see a sequel if they were to make one.

They'd struggle to stretch the concept to 9 films, but these days who knows?

By number nine it would be a movie about killer snowmen, with a distinctly unimpressive Deus Ex Machina ending, almost as anticlimactic as when someone got the vacuum cleaner out in Night of the Dust Creatures

You know, if that was a real film I'd buy the DVD. It's a character flaw.

Quick, the killer snowmen, switch on the sunlamp!

Is Flight of the Living Dead worth £4 of my hard earned cash for the DVD?

Finally caught up with this the other night. As Zed said on another posting, it's fun but it's certainly lacking something. As an old fashioned Plague of the Zombies / Tombs of the Blind Dead kind of guy I would have welcomed much less of the chit chat at the start and some more buildup and anticipation that the Nazis were about to come out of their graves - maybe have the characters wandering around a very ruined Colditz / concentration camp place and bumping into the guy who does the backstory there. Plus I didn't really see the point of introducing a film buff character only for him not to last very long.

On the plus side (which is where I usually start) there are some fantastic shots of the Nazis in the snow, the makeups are all just the right side of horrible, and the acting is pretty good on the whole. Even though I'm a fan of comedy horror I think this would have been a lot better (and a lot more disturbing) if it had been played straight.

You know, Kim Newman has been reviewing stuff recently and he's got quite wonky tastes. He loved this and Triangle. Maybe it's me? :-(
